Freedom of Expression

Freedom to express ourselves is perhaps the central privilege which has allowed mankind to advance from enslavement to liberty and protect our planet...

Socrates was condemned to death for corrupting the youth of Athens and offending the Gods. Why, because he walked around the Agora, the marketplace, asking hard questions of the leading citizens. Three and half centuries later Cicero was beheaded and his hands were cutoff and paraded in public for writing and speaking on behalf of a republic versus a tyranny. For the next approximately 1500 years the public was told what they were allowed to speak and not speak unless they wanted the same punishment! Baruch Spinoza particularly among many other scholars and thinkers were ostracized and banished for presenting alternative views of history, science, religious dogmas and the social order. The Renaissance, Humanism, the Age of Reason and The Enlightenment introduced Modernity where reason questioned faith and superstition. Classical liberalism was developed by John Locke which encouraged a government which protects first principles and their power comes from the “consent of the governed”, with the right to change rulers who fail to protect these rights. Freedom of expression is key, but more important is the results of expressing ourselves which as the the placard the young lady is holding says: THERE IS NO PLANET B!
