Fallibilism

Glowing ringed planet over sparkling starfield

Fallibilism is the view that we as human beings can never be in the position of acquiring ultimate truth, there is always a chance for discovering that we were in error. Walter Kaufman proposed having strong beliefs, held loosely. This approach is quite modern since we have witnessed so many strongly held beliefs which are completely untrue. Copernicus’ heliocentric model for our universe with the sun, not the earth, at the center was published after his death in 1543; as it destroyed all existing beliefs and ushered in the scientific revolution and abductive reasoning. Columbus thought the westward route to the East was much closer and he ended up discovering the New World for the Europeans. Could practicing not holding our beliefs and ideas so intensely help lower our stress and increase our appreciation for living? We can experiment with this approach and notice when our assumptions are wrong and make us stressed out. For instance, I was sitting back in a line of cars which were turning left into ongoing traffic, which I could see was not coming. I’m thinking, “Why are they not turning, and holding me up?”  Well, turns out, once the traffic started moving there had been some children crossing the street which caused the wait. So I was assuming something which was completely incorrect as there was vital information of which I was unaware. The powers that be, engage us in wars that most times are completely unnecessary. If you take the time to read and study the history of wars you will discover that most times they could have been avoided by understanding that different cultures hold different beliefs. However, their beliefs and our beliefs need to be appreciated and not worth fighting and killing over!
