Cosmology: The branch of philosophy dealing with the origin and general structure of the universe, with its parts, elements, and laws, and especially with such of its characteristics as space, time, causality, and freedom. Whew, that’s a mouthful! Let’s just say it’s the study of everything. When I was a boy about 8 or 9 I had a really hard time going to sleep as my mind would just start spinning out wondering what is beyond beyond, where does it all end? It was a really challenging period which I eventually was able to overcome. However, the question persists and this is basically what cosmology approaches. Let’s just consider us conscious beings and our involvement and role in the cosmic order. The first question is whether we are eternally transcendent or is this one life the all in all? Perhaps next, why am I here in the first place? I am here, so what is my purpose if any? The brain is 2% of our body weight, but requires 20% of our energy to operate. Therefore, why waste 10 times our valuable energy thinking about and maybe worrying about these abstract concerns? Well, one simple answer would be that the ‘rat race’ of survival is so intense and requires so much energy that we just do not have the time to delve into such considerations. Another reason may be that your life is pretty good and your government is providing sufficient security and peace, so that we can live in relative harmony even with the day to day frustrations. Today is Sunday and an appropriate day considering our debt to the Sun that we contemplate these questions and be grateful for this amazing opportunity to be. Cosmology is a subset of philosophy which is using reason and critical thinking to explore fundamental questions about existence, knowledge, ethics, and reality. Our request is that our readers, even if life is great and or you are short on time, put aside a few moments to contemplate these eternal questions…
