Tectonic: (Geology) Referring to the forces or conditions within the earth that cause movements of the crust. There are two tectonic shifts happening now: 1) Geopolitics is transforming into geoeconomics, and (2) Petros States are transforming into Electro States. Historically the nation or state with the greatest military power dominated those with inferior strength. We call this geopolitics as directly related to geography and natural and human resources. That dynamic is shifting to geoeconomics where the nations or states use economic interests – such as trade policy, investment, sanctions, and technology controls to promote national interests, produce beneficial results, and influence other nations, often replacing traditional military battlefield methods. At the same time, due to a variety of reasons, the world is moving from dependence on petroleum based energy to electric energy created by alternative sources. Oil, discovered in Pennsylvania in 1859, has definitely had an amazing effect on raising living standards worldwide. However, the OPEC oil embargo from October 1973 to March 1974 gave the world the first example of how critical cheap and accessible energy is to the global economy. In 1974 the US made a 50 year commitment to protect the Arab states in exchange for military protection. It is becoming openly apparent that that agreement had its geographical limitations. More than ever, we are seeing in real time the transformation of the global economy from an energy source which has extreme limitations and drawbacks compared to one with less blowback in terms of military conflicts. Tectonic shifts are generally unforeseen, but are inevitable and force us to hold on for dear life and maybe, run for cover!
