Distance runners focus on endurance of 3km (1.9 miles) and longer such as 5Ks, 10Ks, half-marathons, and marathons. In the fall of 1965 when I was attending Nova High School in West Fort Lauderdale, Florida, one Phys Ed period we had to run laps (437.5 yards / 400 meters) on the outdoor track. I recall completing 16 laps that day or about 4 miles, but that experience of putting one foot in front of the other and just sticking with it made a lifelong impression. In that moment I realized that I definitely was not a sprinter, but somehow or other, in this life, if I could just stay in the race and keep pushing things would work out. Twenty-five years later, when I was an art dealer, my father told me, “some competitors you have to outsell and others you have to outlive.” Life is a challenge and, as we know, no one gets out alive. However, my personal experience is that if we just keep plugging along and suck up the problems and obstacles we face daily, then gradually we will achieve a certain degree of joy and satisfaction.
