Professional sports accounts for approximately 1% of global GDP or about $1.17 trillion. Global GDP for all military spending is about $2.84 trillion. Just for discussion purposes let’s say that half or less of the military spending is on ordnance for offensive and defensive purposes of the collective countries of the world. Therefore, we the people of the world, are producing and spending approximately the same amount to amuse and entertain ourselves through professional sports as we are to wage physical violence not only personally, but also against valuable infrastructure. Competition is integral to human beings as we strive to survive and also reach our own heights of perfection. We generally compete with those of similar abilities to make it interesting. So smaller countries would compete with other smaller countries, etc,. etc. However, in professional sports there are always variations like College, Semi-Pro, Junior Leagues, Major Leagues, etc. None of the teams or players normally kill or destroy the property of the opposing team. Amazingly, the smaller economic markets survive, the women’s sports are growing, and win, lose, or draw everyone lives to see another day. So, why on earth do the countries of the world constantly vie militarily to prove who is the best? Why do we need more than the Olympics for competition to see who is superior in one field or another? Unfortunately, many governments are operating under the ‘Zero-Sum Game’ theory that there are a finite amount of resources and one country’s gain is another’s loss. However, the term, ‘Scarcity Zero’, suggests advocating for technological advancements that enable the sustainable production of essential resources to eliminate scarcity and promote economic growth. Once again it all comes down to whether you look at the world’s resources as abundant or scarce. Whether the glass is half full or half empty…
