Homo sapiens is Latin for ‘wise man’ or ‘knowing man’ reflecting our advanced intelligence, complex language, and ability to reason and create tools. Population growth has expanded 8 fold from the year 1800 when there were approximately 1 billion of us. It doubled from 2.5 to 5 billion from 1950 to 1987, the fastest ever expansion. What does all this mean? Well, for governments who want to stay in power it means that their economies are going to have to continue to grow production just to maintain their populace. This is no easy task as we witness the bitter struggles of nation states constantly warring over land and resources. For us as individual homo sapiens it means that the majority of us have to give more than we take and be glad that we have that ability and potential. No doubt there will always be a segment of society that is either unable or unwilling to carry their part of the load, but for most of us being a productive member of society is a true blessing!
