Nike…

The Nike of Samothrace, also known as the “Winged Victory”, represents the Greek goddess of victory. She is descending from the sky to alight on the prow of a warship. Her clothing, which appears to be whipped by the wind and clings to her body, creates an impression of movement. The wind and the sea are suggested as metaphors of struggle, destiny and divine help or grace. Nike is a personification of victory in both war and athletic contests. Very early in my life I learned the saying, ‘The thrill of victory and the agony of defeat!’. Certainly we like to win in our struggles to succeed in all aspects of life, but unfortunately that will never happen as death is inevitable and absolutely democratic. Gerald, my Uber driver last night, and I both agreed that our health of body and mind is our most important effort in life. ‘Health is Wealth’, is an important precept to model our lives. The goddess Nike is a great example for us as the Greeks put an extreme focus on the physical body and also our mental and philosophical development. The Olympic Games showcase the ultimate in physical expertise while the Socratic method of inquiry develops our mental capacities.
