Wu Wei…

Milky Way arching over glowing campsite tents

Generally speaking we want the best results with the least amount of effort. If we want to increase our results we obviously have to put in more effort. To accomplish this, William James, considered by many as America’s greatest philosopher, implores us to develop good habits, meaning habits returning the best results for the person developing them. The generic habit i’m proposing: reflecting, self educating, application and leading to liberation appears to be simple, but honestly, is not easy. Thinking takes energy; 2% brain body weight requires 20% of our energy. There is no significant proof that thinking harder requires that much more energy, but it does require the determination to do it. Arthur Schopenhauer proposed that we are enslaved by our will (need, craving, urge, striving) and that art and its aesthetic contemplation could reduce our frustration. A thing of beauty is a joy forever, and Schopenhauer felt that music was the pinnacle of the arts since it is a direct expression of the will.
