In Sanskrit atma refers to the body, mind and consciousness (spirit) and rama meaning “pleasing, delightful, charming, or lovely”, from the root ram (to delight). Epicurus philosophy (Epicureanism) proposes the goal of ataraxia or calmness untroubled by mental or emotional disquiet, both quite similar. According to Epicurus, to attain ataraxia, or calmness of the mind, one should completely avoid politics defined as the art or science concerned with winning and holding control over a government. In so-called, ‘democratic societies’, we are supposed to be blessed with the opportunity to vote and choose those who govern us. However, in many cases, that privilege turns out to be more of a hope and prayer that whoever gets elected will actually deliver the bill of goods they were selling. Reciting the popular saying, ‘if voting changed anything they’d abolish it’, comes to mind. We are not proposing that one is a fool for voting or not voting, only that politics and politicians is an extremely messy and complicated affair. If us, as outsiders, choose to get directly involved in politics, rest assured that your body, mind and consciousness will be extremely frustrated and confused like a bee trying to get inside of a honey jar. This is the point, that if our desires for atmarama and ataraxia are to be satisfied, fine, we can follow the politics, but understanding that for the most part we are not players, just spectators, and do not be upset if things don’t go as expected…
