Resilience: The ability of a person to adjust to or recover readily from illness, adversity, major life changes, etc.: buoyancy. For the ancient Greeks, courage was considered the quality from which all other qualities flowed. Courage: The quality of mind or spirit that enables a person to face difficulty, danger, pain, etc., without fear; bravery. When we think of courage we envision a person going up against difficult odds and obstacles which many of us would fear and avoid. However, when we think of resilience we envision just the ability to hold on, ‘for dear life’, and endure whatever pain and struggles that present themselves. In one way, courage is the irresistible force, while resilience is the immovable object. This creates a conundrum, which one gives way first? Or is this the eternal energetic conflict which creates and destroys life itself? Courage represents energy moving forward against all odds and resilience, the energy to withstand forces which may destroy us. Life is paradoxical and considering these ideas hopefully gives us a deeper understanding of when being aggressive or offensive may not be best and being quiet, relaxed, and defensive may be superior…
