Guarantees…

Guarantees, warranties, insurance and promises, we all deal with them constantly. We have experiences which perhaps seriously affect our general state-of-mind. If you had better than average results with car insurance, expensive product warranties, friends and neighbors to watch your back, etc., then perhaps you see the world as somewhat fair. However, if your health insurance doesn’t cover some serious issue, your next door neighbor forgets to feed your pets when you go out of town and the government doesn’t maintain the roads and your car gets excessive damage you can literally feel ripped off. You may naturally sense that the world is not fair and you have been singled out! C’est la vie, the French say, “Such is life!” But does that really solve our problems? There is a saying that if everyone came and put their troubles in a big pile that most of us would be happy to take our own and go away. Pythagoras and the Hindus propose that since we are eternal there are reactions to behavior (karma) which affects this and future lives. Albert Camus forwards that this existence is Absurd and we should make the best of it and find enjoyment where we can. Blaise Pascal had his wager that believing in God is a rational bet, as the potential infinite (eternal life) outweighs the finite loss if God doesn’t exist. Death & taxes, now those guarantees are pretty much universal…
