Useful: being of use or service; serving some purpose; advantageous, helpful, or of good effect. I personally had the great benefit of being raised to be useful. Our parents were determined that their three children would become valuable to society. Nearing her departure my Mother would say, “When I’m no longer useful just throw me in a ditch.” She was very frank about never becoming a burden on her children or society at large. Of course, my Mother’s approach to her end of life is fairly radical, but the point about being useful is critical. Maintaining our own health is first and foremost while becoming educated, characterized by or displaying qualities of culture and learning, gives us our value within the social structure. Education comes in two forms; Externally from institutions and Internally from personal experience and intuition.
