Opening this jar as in the myth of Pandora nowadays describes any action that creates a cascade of unexpected and often disastrous consequences! looking at western history from a macro perspective the advent of the printing press has consequences of seismic proportions. This is essentially when subjective views of reality began being replaced by objective views. Religion being replaced by science. Just look at the history of western art as it went from religious iconography to landscapes, still life, portraits and genre scenes purchased by the burgeoning middle class. With the availability of knowledge the disenfranchised masses gradually were able to unshackle themselves from the veil of superstition employed to keep them in relative slavery. Of course, scientific advancement is a blessing and a curse as we now have the means to sustain 8 billion humans as well as destroy them within a few hours with atomic weapons. Mythically, Pandora sealed the jar as she realized what she had released with only hope left inside! Fortunately, hope also has its own perspective which may for some of us ‘Spring Eternal’, as it is human nature always to find cause for optimism!
